Photographing The Human Face - Minimizing Wrinkles

This is the first in a series of articles designed to improve your photography. Your job as a photographer (whether you're an amateur or professional) is simple. You have to make your subjects look as good as they've EVER looked without your tricks and techniques being obvious. That's a task easier said than done.

A number of repairs and improvements can be done in Photoshop, but unless you are a true master at retouching, it's hard to do too much without ruining the portrait. The more problems that you fix "in the camera" the better off you will be and the easier it will be to get seamless retouches.

Today let's talk about wrinkles and acne.

You won't have to do many portrait studies to realize your models all have a few traits in common. Your older subjects want to look younger, even if they don't say they do, and younger subjects want to minimize their acne. Let's face it, as we get older our wrinkles become more pronounced and actually deeper. Wrinkles are the first photographic signs of our age but they're a problem that is actually fairly easy to fix.

What defines a wrinkle? It's the shadows filling in the crevices. As we get older and those crevices get deeper, the shadows become darker and darker. How to get rid of wrinkles and take years off your photographic model?

Lessen the shadows.

If you have light that is glancing across the face from above or to the side of the subject, the deepest part of the wrinkle crevices are not getting any light and appear darker. This makes our model look older. Depending on the directionality and intensity of the light, this can add a lot of "visual" years to our subject.

To make your model look younger, have your light shining directly into their face. This way the light is able to get into the "bottom" of the wrinkle. The wrinkles are filled with light which lessens their shadow effect and the years drop off dramatically. The time spent in Photoshop does too!

Acne? Use the same cure. Acne scars, pimples and other facial blemishes are at least partially defined by the shadows they cast on the face. Again, light skimming the face from the side will cast longer and harder shadows thus making the acne scars more pronounced and pimples will appear larger. Shine your light directly into the face and they will be minimized or disappear altogether.

Use a reflector of some sort or even your on camera flash in addition to the sun to fill in the shadows. Your smooth faced teens and wrinkle free adults will thank you.

Aerial Kite Photography - Nailing A Camera To The Sky

Ever flown a kite or taken a photograph? Well, that's most of us isn't it! No wonder aerial kite photography holds such a fascination for so many people. More correctly, it's known as Kite Aerial Photography, or KAP, which is less of a mouthful.

Some have theorized that it's part of our human nature to want to see things from the air. Consider the fact that aerial views of cities and landscapes were sketched or painted long before any flying machine was invented!

The hobby of aerial kite photography got started in earnest around the mid 1980s. However, the very first examples of such photos date back to not long after photography itself was invented. In 2007, KAP is more popular than ever. The subject matter varies widely, but buildings and landscapes are particularly popular.

Digital cameras are widely used in aerial kite photography. In fact, their use in KAP has pretty much stayed in step with their acceptance by the general public. Initially, the cheaper cameras just couldn't take a decent picture compared to a 35mm film camera. As we all know, that is not the case now! Some digitals are very small and light, which is an advantage for doing KAP.

At the cheapest end of the scale, disposable cameras combined with ice triggers and balsa wood cradles enable small, cheap kites to be used. On the other hand, this approach allows bigger kites to take pictures in very gentle breezes which wouldn't allow heavier gear to stay airborne.

Some enthusiasts are after quality at any cost. Hence, they spend many hundreds of dollars on high-end cameras, radio-control gear and special equipment to suspend it aloft with a minimum of movement. The R/C gear allows the camera to be panned around to get the best shots, and the shutter clicked on command.

Some Aerial Kite Photography Highlights

Here's just 3 of the more notable activities of these photo-artistic kite fliers:

A quite famous aerial photograph was taken from a kite in 1906, documenting the San Francisco earthquake. A KAP enthusiast named Scott Haefner did a re-shoot of this striking picture, close to its 100th anniversary.

A small group of experts known as Team Drachen made good use of some grant money by using KAP to document whale behavior. This took place at San Ignacio Lagoon, Baja, in Mexico.
In November, 2002 a 360-degree panorama of the San Andreas Fault was created from KAP images.

The Equipment

You've probably gathered by now that this hobby requires a kite, a flying line, and a camera. It might come as a surprise to learn that the camera is usually suspended from the flying line, not the kite itself.

Although other types can and are used, flow-form kites are very popular in kite photography. With no spars and therefore no assembly required, you can just turn up somewhere and get your camera in the air immediately. These kites are convenient to transport as well, since they roll up into a small bag. Another advantage is that they are tolerant of quite strong winds.

Interestingly, zoom lenses are of little use in kite photography. In fact, people often try to cram more scenery into the field of view by using wide-angle lenses, even fish-eye lenses. Another popular technique is photo-stitching, where a number of images are combined into one super-wide panorama.

Accessories

A piece of gear commonly used by serious KAPers is the Picavet, an arrangement of lines and pulleys. Yes, it was invented by a Frenchman, in the early 20th century. However, it wasn't until the late 20th century that it was re-discovered and put to widespread use in KAP. It's purpose is to provide a stable and self-leveling platform for the camera, while suspended from the flying line. Some aerial photography enthusiasts add other devices such as vanes and porous sheets to reduce the movement and give even more opportunity for getting good pictures.

Finally, it's handy to know what the average wind strength is. With a little device called an anemometer or wind speed meter you can decide what kite and camera rig to put up. In stronger winds, it can help you decide whether to attempt flying at all. Kites and cameras can get lost when the flying line snaps!

Considerations When Choosing an Aerial Photographic Supplier – Deadlines to Meet?

When sourcing a supplier for your aerial photographic needs you must ensure that you make your deadlines clear to the company. If an aerial photographic company has a large amount of work to complete and knows that it will be unable to provide the necessary service then they should advise you that they will be unlikely to meet the deadline.

One of the largest problems in the UK is the weather. The weather will not only affect the operation from an aviation perspective, but also and to a greater extent from a photographic perspective. This is the most likely reason for an aerial photographic company to miss a deadline! Although a supplier can’t change the weather they must be able to react quickly, having full time professional pilots and their own aircraft is one way of achieving this.

The type of aerial photography required will also dictate the level of influence the weather has. For example oblique aerial photography of a large area will require good horizontal visibility, usually above 10 kilometres. However, if it is event aerial photography then the work will normally be completed providing the weather minima is above the pilots and aircrafts flying minima. Often large events will be over several days so the supplier should carefully select the day when the weather is at its best to enable the best event photography to be completed.

When a deadline is close it is of up most important to ensure good communication between the supplier and client. It may be possible for the client to accept photography in not perfect conditions, e.g. with cloud shadow. If this is the case then there will be more chance of the supplier meeting the deadline and more chance of a satisfied customer. Construction photography is one area where this maybe possible. Taking Great Pictures of Your Kids.Save Time and Money! Plus, Make Money Taking Pictures of Other People’s Kids!We all know how expensive family portraits can be.

We also know how time consuming it is to find a photographer in your area, who is good at what they do. Once we get the money part and the time part figured out, the kids are sick or fussy on the day of the appointment! So, what can you do? You can learn to take your own portraits at home. This might sound complicated at first, but really it is not that hard to learn. As long as you have a digital camera, you are off to a great start.I’m sure you are thinking, what am I going to use as a background for the portraits? Almost anything will work for a background.

A white wall, a sheet hung by tacks or a curtain rod, a room divider, a blanket, a large poster, an area rug, are all great to use as a background. Always place your child at least 4 to 5 feet in front of the background. This will keep unwanted shadows of the background and will make the child stand out.

Lighting is about the most difficult to learn, but I will show you simple ways to get it accomplished. First of all, turn off your camera flash. It creates to harsh of lighting, and makes for very unflattering photos. If you have a large window that lets in a lot of sun, you can pose your child in front of it. Just be sure to turn the child only three-quarters of the way to face the window. This will light up most of his/her face and leave the other side in shadows. Doing this will make for a more flattering picture. However, only use window lighting on a cloudy day, early or late in the day.

You do not want to use direct sunlight coming from the window, it is almost like using a flash! Of course if you have some sheers hung on the window to diffuse the sunlight, than you may use it at anytime of the day.For those of you that do not have a good window to use, I recommend shop lights (unless you can afford strobe lights, but they are more for proffesional use). Halogen shop lights (the type with two lights on a stand) run about $20.00.

They are excellent for portrait lighting. Set them up about 5 feet in front of where your child will be sitting, and slightly to the side and above your child. Then hang a white sheet about 1 foot in front of the lights. This will diffuse the lights and give them a soft glowing effect.If you would rather take pictures outdoors, here are a few tips. Make sure that you find an uncluttered background.

Grass, sky, hills all work well. You can even use trees, but pay attention that there is not going to be one that looks as though it is sticking out of your child’s head in the picture. As with photographing by the window, never take a portrait of your child in direct sunlight. It will create harsh shadows and make for a very unflattering picture. Overcast days, dawn or dusk are usually great times. If that is not possible, have your child stand in the shade of a few trees or a building.

Just remember to make sure there are no strange shadows on their face.(By the way, the shop lights get very hot, so keep little fingers away and don’t get your diffusing sheet too close.)One more tip ! Make sure you zoom in to get more of your child and less of the background.

Since the water refracts and distorts images, the closer you are to your photography subject, the less distortion you will have. A great deal of patience is required for under water photography. You may be trying to take a photo a fish or dolphin, but than they suddenly swim away before you get a chance to. Also, water contains many particles like plankton that can cause the image to lose contrast and sharpness.

Using an underwater flash, or strobe, will help provide the proper lighting necessary for taking a great picture. Therefore, it is essential to use an underwater camera with a flash. This will help to bring in other colors and contrast them with the colors of the subject. A medium sized strobe is all that is necessary as a large strobe can end up getting in the way.

Composition is extremely important. The same basic rules apply as in regular photography, but you should shoot at an upward angle towards the subject. Because of the camouflage technique of most sea life, they tend to blend into their habitats. Since they do not stand out like this, they do not make good photographs. The key is to always try to get a clear shot whenever the subject blends into the ocean background.

Interior Photography

Interior photography is very demanding and the photographer must be sensitive to all the elements that will appear in the final print. Most rooms consist of small objects that look good in the room, but in a print, these objects may cluster the image.

Photographing interiors involves working within a confined space, so the first thing you need is a suitable lens. Most of us would prefer to use a wide-angle lens, but this lens causes problems with image distortion. Distortion is a large and common problem when shooting interiors, but can be reduced if you use a lens with the focal length set between 80 and 100.

Interior images should be bright, with perfect exposure and have fresh vibrant colours. This is the standard used by publishers all over the world. To achieve this the photographer must be able to control these elements and have a very good understanding of light.

Light will play an important part when photographing interiors. Most of your images will be shot with a low shutter speed, because natural light levels will be very low, so a tripod will be needed. If the natural light is good, use a reflector to bounce the light into the dark areas of the room.

If the natural light is not good enough you will have to use a strobe unit. Try to bounce the light off a photographic umbrella to soften the light in the room. If you are using more than one light have some reflectors with you.

Composition is very important when photographing interiors. Here are some pointers that you may find useful and helpful:

Look out for lines that will lead to the focal point of your image. By leading with lines into the main part of the scene you will draw observers into your photograph. These lines don't have to be straight. They can be a row of seats or interesting converging vertical objects.

Simple foreground objects are also perfect for composition. Patterns on a floor can give your interior a greater sense of depth. Use a small aperture (f/22) to keep the entire scene in focus.
Try to frame your scene with some of the elements in the room. This will focus attention on the main part of the picture.

Tiles on the floor and walls can be very handy as composition when photographing a room - use the tiles to focus attention on the focal point of the room. When photographing bathrooms, if possible exclude the toilet. Always try to exclude anything that you think is distasteful.
Sometimes framed pictures hanging on walls will appear distorted so it is best not to include them. If you are photographing someone's home ask the owner before you move items.

Good interior images are not easy to take but the rewards are great if you can master the trade. If you are unsure of the standard, buy some of the magazines that use these images. Publishers pay fine prices for well exposed, good quality indoor images.

Nikon D40 Digital SLR Camera Review

Devastating its predecessor the Nikon D50 Digital SLR camera, the all new compact and affordable point-and-shoot Nikon D40 Digital SLR camera comes at a significantly lower price. With a subtly different set of features Nikon has trimmed some of the 'less important features and have included a range of new features including the custom Auto ISO feature available on the Nikon D80 Digital SLR cameras.

Nikon appears to have concentrated on what makes a good camera. A solid viewfinder,a short shutter lag, and an exceptionally short viewfinder blackout. On the negative side the Nikon D40 Digital SLR camera does not have an internal focus drive motor and as a result no mechanical focus drive pin. Rather it has CPU contacts allowing Auto Focus only with AF-S and AF-I lenses which have built-in focus motors. This means the Nikon 'standard' lenses the Nikkor 50 mm F1.8D and the F1.4D will be manual focus only on the Nikon D40 Digital SLR camera.

The difference in the lens mount of the Nikon D40 Digital SLR camera and the Nikon D80 Digital SLR camera is the mechanical focus drive pin at about the 7 o'clock position on the mount of the Nikon D80 Digital SLR camera.

I personally purchased the Nikon D40 Digital SLR camera and my family and I have been taking pictures non stop since purchasing it in January 2007. I highly recommend the Nikon D40 Digital SLR camera for an entry level professional grade camera. I also would suggest purchasing a large memory chip I purchased a 4GB chip for under 100 dollars at Futureshop and it held over 1600 photos at the highest resolution the camera offers.

Hats off to Nikon, for delivering a solid, affordable digital camera with multitude of features and resisting the temptation to enter the chase for more mega pixels.

Don't Ever Buy A Canon Digital Rebel XTi

While there may be plenty of good reasons to buy a Canon Digital Rebel XTi, not every camera is good for every photographer. So, depending on what's important to you, and how you take pictures, you should probably be aware of the short comings of this camera. There's plenty of information out there about how great this camera is, but for just a minute or two, lets be brutally and critically honest.

The Canon Digital Rebel XTi, is guilty of underexposure in any and all lighting conditions, specifically with the auto setting turned on. Even Canon will have trouble disputing this claim. I heard from one XTi owner that went as far as to send in pictures taken from two separate XTi cameras to Canon, and ask what was wrong. All the pictures were dark and underexposed, and Canon told them, that yes the camera used to take those pictures was defective. Not realizing of course, that the pictures came from two brand new cameras. Apparently the problem is really with the auto settings. If your the type of photographer, that never uses the out of the box factory settings, then this may not be a issue for you. Otherwise just take a pass, there are plenty of other good cameras you should be considering.

The XTi has a rather annoying habit of locking up when quickly taking a consecutive number of pictures in a row. The shutter just locks up and issues a busy signal. According to Canon, this is normal and the camera is performing as designed. At first glance, this may seem like just a case of not enough battery power for the strength of the flash. But, no, it's actually the way the camera is designed to work. The XTi manual comes right out and says this is a safety feature intended to protect the flash. Again, you need to judge if this is an issue for you. If your the type that likes to fire off twenty or so pictures in a row, then this camera will likely annoy you to no end. Otherwise, this is really a non issue.

One last thing. It's pretty standard, that all digital cameras come with an LCD screen. It's pretty nice to be able to use the LCD screen while taking a picture, so the don't need to have the camera right in your face. The little point and shoot digital I bought for my daughter went so far as to eliminate the view finder altogether. Apparently that manufacturer realized using the LCD is the favorite choice of most users. With the XTi, Canon made the unusual decision to go the other way. The only way to see what picture your taking, is to use the viewfinder. The 2.5 inch LCD is very nice, you just can't use it to see what picture your currently taking. It's only used to review pictures already taken, or to adjust the camera settings. I guess they're just trying to save battery power. Who knows? Once again, it's all a case of what's important to you and how you take photos.

So, if I haven't convinced you yet not to buy a Canon Digital Rebel XTi, or you would prefer to hear some nice things about the Rebel XTi, that's fine. Here's some other nice cameras to consider. Just remember, it's always good to get a balanced opinion and then decide what is really right for you.

How to Solve Digital Photography Image Problems

Many people have unrealistic expectations of digital photography. They may believe that digital photographs are 'perfect' in terms of colour and detail. In fact, many problems can occur -- some of them are an inherent part of the digital domain, while others can be caused by incorrect settings on the camera. Here are a few simple way to solve image problem.

1.Reducing Noise

Any part of a digital image that was not present in the original scene is referred to as 'noise'. It may appear as specks in the photograph, washed out areas of white, or blotchy patches where there should be an even gradation of shade.

There are several things you can do to keep noise to a minimum. It is most noticeable in shots with extended exposure times or high ISO settings. ISO settings are related to film 'speed' -- high-speed film can capture images at very short exposure times. This is ideal for action shots such as athletic events. However, High ISO setting produce more noise than low ISO settings.

Similarly, long exposure times also introduce excess noise. Long exposure settings can be used to take pictures in low light conditions such as dimly lit interiors. Keeping ISO settings low and exposure times relatively short will minimize noise as you take photographs.

2.Colour balance control

Digital cameras can be adjusted for colour balance but they need to have a reference point. This is what the white balance control does -- using white as a reference point, the digital camera can, in theory, accurately reproduce all of the other colours.

Most cameras can be set to automatically adjust the white balance. This setting is usually the most appropriate but for tricky light situations the automatic setting may be turned off to allow the photographer to manually adjust the camera. This can also be used for artistic effect -- a white balance set to an extreme can produce weird, unearthly colours.

If you have the opportunity to re-shoot a scene which has been improperly exposed, by all means go ahead and try to improve the image. However, if the scene cannot be re-created, save the image and try to work on it with software.

3.Choose the best Quality lense

If you are using lense and image quality is important to you, be sure to get good-quality glass lenses .A bad lens is going to give you bad images. That is why it is essential to choose a digital camera with the best quality lens you can afford.

Get good-quality glass lenses and keep them well maintained. Dirt and dust on lenses can cause distortion and noise in the final image, so keep them as clean as possible without excessive handling. A soft brush and a blower should be all that is needed if the lenses are kept covered when not in use.

4.Use Imaging Software

Professional imaging software such as Photoshop can be used to correct colour irregularities, white balance, lens distortion, incorrect exposure, and blurring.

Digital photographs, after all, are computer data which can be manipulated down to the bit level, so it is always possible to change the minutest detail of any image. Software can automate many of these corrective functions, and manual manipulation is also possible to improve any digital image.

With so many wedding tasks, choosing the right wedding photography can seem like the most difficult. Not only are the pictures usually your sole documentation of the event, but they are something you will want to proudly display and pass down to your children.

There are many concerns you may have when selecting a wedding photographer. First, you should like the style and displayed pictures that you've seen from that photographer. Next, you need a photographer that can also fit within your budget. If you are in love with a certain photographer's work but they won't budge on the price, you'll have to cut costs somewhere else.

Finally, one of the most important aspects you may not have thought of is the relationship and chemistry you have with your photographer. You should feel comfortable around your photographer so that your true emotions will be able to easily be captured on your wedding day. Evaluate your photographer's personality, work style, and other items by asking the following questions in the face to face interview.

• Have you had a disaster wedding or mishaps? How did you handle them?

• How do you handle when guests aren't being cooperative? What if others are taking pictures while you're working?

• Do you have clients or references that I can talk to about their experiences?

• Can you come early to the ceremony to get extra shots? Does this cost extra?

• Do you offer a CD or DVD of the images? Is this in the package or does it cost extra?

• Can you customize a package for me or lower the price without taking anything out?

• How much are reprints?

• How long should I expect to wait until I receive my pictures?

• What kind of albums do you offer?

Before you finalize any contract, carefully read everything that is written in it. Be sure everything you discussed and want is in the contract, or you won't be guaranteed to receive it. Pay attention to the time constraints, travel, and other items in the package so you know what to expect. Overestimate the time period needed because of travel requirements or if you're running late. This will take away some of the worry so you can enjoy the big day.

Overall, as long as you like the photographer's style, price, and personality (professionalism), your wedding pictures should turn out beautifully.
